A friend who was recently injured asked for a small guitar that would be more comfortable than his full-sized model. So we’re going to build a very small guitar similar to a Martin 5 series and add a built-in arm rest. There is a story that a similar request was the inspiration for the first acoustic guitar arm rest. I don’t know if that’s true or who invented the arm rest but it is now a very popular feature offered by most major guitar manufactures. It’s tricky to do and there are multiple ways to do it. For my first attempt, I’m going to try using templates — essentially replacing the kerfing with walnut in the area where the arm goes over the lower bout – and rounding it over for a softer feel. Successful or not, I expect to learn something here.
